From Charlottesville to Leesburg, the Journey Through Hallowed Ground byway is steeped in presidential history. Explore the breathtaking estates which some of America’s greatest leaders called home and imagine their lives outside of the presidency.
Start your journey at President Thomas Jefferson’s famous Monticello estate, well-known as an architectural masterpiece. Take in a spring morning in the beautifully restored gardens and tour the decadent rooms of the original, authentically furnished mansion. History buffs love the “Behind the Scenes” tour of the restricted upper floors of the house, while kids enjoy the hands-on activities in Griffin Discovery Room.
Continue your journey north about 45 minutes to President James Madison’s home, Montpelier. The 2,650-acre estate boasts a mansion, 135 historic buildings, a steeplechase course, gardens, the Gilmore Cabin, a farm, an Education Center, and many archaeological sites. There are also several walking trails to the James Madison Landmark Forest, Mount Pleasant, Civil War sites, the Slave Cemetery, and the Madison Family Cemetery.
While you could easily spend an entire day at Monticello and Montpelier, consider continuing your drive to pass by President James Monroe’s Oak Hill property in Loudon County. While the mansion itself is closed the public, you can see some of the grounds and scenic VA 15 is quite lovely leading into historic downtown Leesburg.
